Senate Bill 3, the NC Compassionate Care Act, failed in the Summer of 2023 as a result of Republican opposition. This is likely to stall any medical legalization in North Carolina for the foreseeable future.
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians legalized its own medical marijuana market, making the tribe the only provider of medical cannabis in North Carolina. Anyone who has one of the 18 qualifying conditions outlined by the tribe can apply for a medical cannabis recommendation
The tribe will vote on September 7, 2023 on whether or not they will legalize adult use cannabis. If passed, it may prove to be a large development for the state.
