Although 2024 polling has shown that 86% of register Wisconsin voters support the legalization of cannabis, there hasn't been any significant progress in congress to get to cannabis legalization. However, in January 2025, Democratic Governor Tony Evers announced that he plans to put forward an initiative to allow the citizens of Wisconsin to collect signatures to get statutory measures or constitutional amendments on the state ballots. Governor Evers is aiming to give power to the citizens of Wisconsin. It's not clear whether this initiative will be successful, but it's positive to see Gov. Evers continuing to push for pathways to a legal cannabis market.
Wisconsinites involved in The Badger State's $4B alcohol market will likely contribute a portion of those dollars to the cannabis market once the state reaches legalization. Keep an eye out for the state regulators to adopt a medical marijuana program as a minimum to start reaping the sales tax revenue that is currently crossing the border to Illinois and now Minnesota.
Pressures have been mounting in the Badger State for years. Cannabis polls have received overwhelming support in the counties and municipalities where the questions were posed. With legalization passing in Minnesota, Wisconsin is now entirely surrounded by varying levels of cannabis legalization in bordering states. Keep an eye out for any updates on Governer Evers's proposal for citizen-initiated ballot measures.
